چکیده

A new method is presented for the identification of basic color terms (BCTs) from a language’s color-naming data. A function is defined to measure how well a term is understood in a communicating population. A threshold value is then constructed for this function to separate basic terms from other terms. Also, a new mathematical method is proposed and analyzed for determining the best exemplar associated with a basic color term. Using data from 110 societies provided by the World Color Survey, comparisons are made between our methods and other known studies. The comparisons suggest a new definition of “basicness” which mostly agrees with the typical definition due to Kay and colleagues (B. Berlin, T. Regier, and other colleagues) found in the color categorization literature, but which has the advantage of not relying on syntactic or semantic features of languages or color lexicons, and therefore permits a methodology that is generalizable to other category domains for which a construct of “basicness” plays a role. Cognitive psychology theory suggests that humans conceptualize worldly objects using relational frameworks that resemble hierarchical models of classification. These intuitive and compelling hierarchies provide nested ways of classifying and organizing things in the world according to varying levels of specificity. Examples of different relational hierarchy levels are: superordinate 1 MBS TECHNICAL REPORT 16-02

Confidence Judgments on Color Category Best Exemplars

Although basic color terms and basic color appearances have been shown to produce higher confidence ratings in a variety of naming and judgment tasks, our findings suggest that when different ethnolinguistic cultures are compared, higher confidence is not strictly linked to the basic foci of Berlin and Kay nor the centroid samples identified by Boynton and colleagues. This raises important ques...

By introducing of digital techniques, forensic document examiners has been encouraged to work with better accuracy in non-destructive ways. The aim of this study was to present a non-destructive, accessible, economic (affordable), user friendly, portable, useful and easy technique for specifying the order of crossing lines of ink stroke and printed text. The relational correspondence between category exemplars and names

While recognizing the theoretical importance of context, current research has treated naming as though semantic meaning were invariant and the same mapping of category exemplars and names should exist across experimental contexts. An assumed symmetry or bidirectionality in naming behavior has been implicit in the interchangeable use of tasks that ask subjects to match names to stimuli and tasks...

The Effects of Bilingualism on Basic Color Terms in Persian

This study is to determine how bilingualism could influence the list of Persian basic color terms and their order. Using a monolingual Persian and a bilingual Kurd sample students, and a color list task, it is assumed that bilingualism could change the ordering of the non-basic color terms in the second language, but not the basic ones. Another assumption is that, the old usual methods for obta...

Color Categorical Perception

Categorical perception (CP) occurs when discrimination of items that cross category boundaries is faster or more accurate than discrimination of exemplars from the same category. Categorical perception of color is observed when, for example, a green stimulus and a blue stimulus are more easily distinguished than two stimuli from the same color category (e.g., two different shades of green). Col...
